No 'evidence of sacrilege', FIR to be amended, says Punjab CM Channi on Kapurthala lynching

Police has arrested the main accused and the in-charge of the Gurdwara Nijampur Mod, Amarjit Singh in this case.

New Delhi, December 24: Nearly one week after a man was lynched in a Gurudwara, the Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Friday said that no evidence of sacrilege has been found in the Kapurthala case. CM Channi further also informed that the incident was being probed and FIR registered in the case was to be amended after the latest finding.

Addressing a press conference, Channi said, "In Kapurthala (killing of a man for alleged sacrilege), no evidence that sacrilege was done. The matter is being probed... FIR to be amended."
 
 
Soon after the announcement, the Police arrested, the main accused and the in-charge of the Gurdwara Nijampur Mod, Amarjit Singh in this case. Apart from them, 100 people have been booked in the case. IG GS Dhillon confirmed the arrest, and said, “We have registered a case of murder against 100 people to set an example that lynching cannot be allowed.”
 
On December 19, an unidentified man was allegedly beaten to death by locals at Nizampur in Punjab's Kapurthala district for allegedly disrespecting the `Nishan Sahib` at the village Gurudwara. Videos of people beating up the man who allegedly attempted sacrilege have gone viral on the internet. Later, the man's postmortem revealed that he was attacked using a sharp weapon.
 
"It has been revealed in the postmortem that he was attacked over with a sharp weapon leading to multiple injuries. There are over 30 sharp cut marks on the body including neck, head, and hip," executive Senior Medical Officer (SMO) Dr. Narinder Singh informed. The last rites of the man were performed by the Municipal Corporation after the postmortem.
