New Delhi, November 30: Twitter Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Parag Agrawal has taken over from Jack Dorsey as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the tech giant announced this week. This move came as a surprise as there was no hint that Dorsey was planning on stepping down. It has emerged that Twitter board had been preparing for his exit since last year.
Who is Parag Agrawal, the new CEO of Twitter?
Parag is an alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, and had become the Twitter CTO in March 2018, succeeding Adam Messinger following his departure in December 2016. His appointment was internally announced back in October 2017.
He moved to USA in 2005, and joined Twitter in October 2011 as an ads engineer. He also held the title of Distinguished Software Engineer. He did research internships at AT&T, Yahoo, Microsoft, prior to joining Twitter. Agarwal completed his PhD in computer science from Stanford University in 2011.
His early work based on using artificial intelligence (AI) to increase relevance of tweets on timelines has been well recognised. His appointment as the Twitter CEO makes him the latest in the long line of Indian-origin tech chiefs - which includes Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Google-promoter Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.
Twitter has revealed that as CEO, Parag will be given an annual compensation of $1 million along with a stock compensation worth $12.5 million.
