New Delhi, Nov 18: Amid the India-China border conflict, both countries will hold discussions over pending border issues today.
The talks will be held under Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC).
The Indian side had pointed out that the situation along the LAC had been caused by unilateral attempts of the Chinese side to alter the status quo and in violation of the bilateral agreements.
India and China held the 13th round of the India-China Corps Commander-level meeting last month. At that time, India had said the meeting to resolve the LAC standoff ended not on good terms. The Army, in a statement, said it gave “constructive suggestions” but the Chinese side was “not agreeable”. They also could not provide any forward-looking proposals, the Army said.
The meeting was conducted amid increasing reports of incursions by the Chinese at various places along the LAC. Indian and Chinese patrols came face-to-face in Tawang a few days ago, and Chinese troops crossed the LAC in Barahoti in Uttarakhand at the end of August. Army Chief General M M Naravane had said on Saturday that China has been building infrastructure in the region, and was “here to stay”.

Over 13 rounds of military talks and a series of diplomatic parleys were held between India and China, but the tensions still continue. There has been some disengagement, but India says full disengagement will only result in de-escalation. Some disengagement has indeed taken place recently, but it is not complete.
Besides, China passed a new land law for the “protection and exploitation of the country’s land border areas”. Reacting to that, the Ministry of External Affairs had said that border law is a concern to India and it could unilaterally alter the situation in the India-China border areas.
