New Delhi, November 15: Taking the action, Tripura police detained HW News journalists Samriddhi Sakunia and Swarna Jha, for publishing and broadcasting "false and fabricated" news aimed at "disrupting communal harmony". They were detained following a complaint filed by Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s leader, Kanchan Das.
The FIR against the journalists has been registered at Fatikroy Police Station, and the police have detained them under Sections 120(B), 152(A), and 504 of the Indian Penal Code.
"Tripura Police have registered a number of cases against two female journalists Samriddhi Sakunia and Swarna Jha and detained them for publishing and broadcasting false and fabricated news aimed at disrupting communal harmony," said IG (Law and Order) Arindam Nath said.
In a complaint, Das has alleged that the journalists "delivered instigating speech against Hindus and the Tripura Govt."He further added that Sakunia had falsely imparted VHP and Bajrang Dal for allegedly damaging the mosque on Paul Bazar. He said their actions were part of a criminal conspiracy to destroy communal harmony in the region.
It said that the police asked the two journalists to share the documents visible in their videos, but instead of coming to Agartala, the two reporters made an escape towards Assam. When Tripura Police came to know about it, they asked Assam Police to take action against them. Following that, Assam Police detained the duo in Karimganj district while they were going to Guwahati.
Tripura witnessed communal disturbances following clashes in Dharmanagar, of North Tripura. The reports suggest that there were incidents where public and private property was vandalised during a protest rally organised by VHP in Tripura against the attack on Hindus in Bangladesh.
Amidst the communal tension, some reports surfaced that a mosque has been vandalised. Several social media handles shared unrelated visuals and made fake claims of a mosque being damaged during communal tension. Both Tripura Police and the Union Home Ministry have categorically denied such reports.
