Tap water reaches 14,500 feet! Leh's Chushul village gets first 24X7 tap connection

Chushul, November 12: It is indeed an emotional yet happy moment for the people of Leh's Chushul village as they get 24\7 first functional household tap connection (FHTC) under the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Jal Jeevan Mission.
Chushul is a village in the Leh district of Ladakh and s located in the Durbuk tehsil, in the area known as "Chushul Valley", south of the Pangong Lake and west of the Spanggur Lake. It is situated at a height of over 14,500 feet close to the LAC and has a temperature of -15 degrees.
According to reports, government engineers and contractors have connected 12 of the region’s 60 villages with 24X7 piped water connection in the cold desert under the flagship Jal Jeevan Mission, defying odds that have often left Leh behind in terms of modern infrastructure.
The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) scheme aims to connect every rural household in the country with a functional tap water connection by 2024. Over 120 million households in India lacked access to clean water near their homes, the highest in the world, according to an UN-Water report of 2014.
India has 189 million rural households, according to Census data, and the race to reach piped water to every household is on. As of November 10, nearly 84.7 million households have been provided with a functioning tapped water supply source. This is 44% of total rural households.
Of Leh’s 24,767 households, 5,425 households now have tapped water.
The Union Budget had allotted ₹10,001 crores in 2019-20 for the national rural drinking water mission. In 2020-21, ₹11500 crores were provided. The Union budget 2021-22 allotted ₹50,000 crores for the mission.
