Shillong, Oct5: On Monday, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu exhorted the North-Eastern Council to catapult the northeast region into a resurgent phase of accelerated growth by quickly resolving challenges that have stymied its progress.
According to a press release from the Vice President's Secretariat, while speaking at a workshop on the "Changing Role of the North-Eastern Council in the development of the North-Eastern Region," the Vice President stated that India's progress cannot be complete if there is uneven progress in various regions.
"If the northeast region advances, India advances; if the region lags, India lags," he noted.
He advised the North-Eastern states to share best practices in various fields in order to gain mutually. "India should function as Team India—the Centre, states, and local bodies working together to find answers to developmental concerns," Naidu added.
While praising the NE Council for its commendable accomplishments, he stated "We cannot simply rest on our past successes. We surely have a long way to go ".
He stated that now was the moment to reconsider the Council's ways as it prepares to tackle the challenges of the winds of change that must be harnessed in the interests of the North-Eastern Region and its people.
He described the establishment of the Council as a seminal landmark in redefining the approach to the development of the North-Eastern Region and listed some of its accomplishments, including the construction of more than 11,000 kilometres of roads, 10,340 kilometres of power transmission and distribution lines, and the establishment of an iconic institution, among others.
He expressed his delight at the discernible improvement in the region's economy over the last six and a half years, stating that the per capita net state domestic product of all states has increased significantly.
He stated that the young of the region, like their counterparts in other regions of the country, are eager to write a new chapter in our country's history. He stated that they must be provided opportunities and encouragement through real acts.
