Stooping down to their level, Karnataka Congress erupted another controversy by putting out a derogatory tweet against Prime Minister Narendra Modi labeling him as "angootha-chhaap" or illiterate. Following the flak, Congress deleted the tweet and issued an apology while pinning the blame on a ‘novice social media handler.’
In a tweet from its official Twitter account, Karnataka Congress in Kannada said, “Congress built schools but Modi never went to study. Congress even set up schemes for adults to learn, Modi didn’t learn there too. Even though begging is prohibited, people who are lazy have made the country’s people beggars. The country is suffering because of #angoothachhaapmodi.”
The tweet triggered a strong response from the BJP, which termed it as “crass” and “in poor taste”. After which, Karnataka Congress president DK Shivakumar reportedly asked his team to take down the social media post.
Withdrawing the controversial post, Shivakumar admitted last night that it fell short of the standards of "civil and parliamentary language" in political discourse. “I have always believed that civil and parliamentary language is a non-negotiable pre-requisite for political discourse. An uncivil tweet by a novice social media manager via Karnataka Congress official Twitter handle is regretted and stands withdrawn,” Tweeted Shivakumar.
On the other hand, defending the tweet, Congress spokesperson Lavanya Ballal said, “The BJP’s tweets are so often crass and crude, can we talk about them?’’ Former BJP former state media convener S Shantaram said, ‘’If the social media team of any political party relies on inexperience, it translates into crass and impolite language. Such tweets and communication will have no effect on the people in the long run. The social media teams need to understand that politics is not about criticism merely for the sake of it.’’
This came just ahead of the bypolls to be held for the Sindagi and Hanagala constituencies on October 30 in Karnataka. The seats fell vacant after the deaths of senior Janata Dal (Secular) leader M C ManagulI and BJP’s C M Udasi respectively. The bypolls will be seen as a litmus test for Basavaraj Bommai who recently replaced BS Yediyurappa as the state's chief minister.
