Mumbai, September 11: The Mumbai session court on Friday rejected the bail application of Rhea and Showik Chakraborty, who were arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in connection with the drugs case linked to the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Apart from Rhea and Showik, the court also rejected the bail of eight other accused.
Their bail applications were rejected by judge G B Gurao of the special court hearing cases filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Rhea, in her plea, had stated that she was innocent and falsely implicated. In her bail application, Chakraborty had alleged that during her interrogation by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), she was "coerced" into making "self-incriminating confessions." She also claimed that she has not committed any crime whatsoever and has been falsely implicated in the case. The plea also said that no female officer was present during her interrogation.
Rhea was sent to judicial custody for 14 days after her arrest on Tuesday. Her brother Showik was in Narcotics Control Bureau remand since September 4.Rhea and her brother Showik have been booked under Section 27A of the NDPS Act—financing illicit traffic and harboring offenders.
Special Public Prosecutor Atul Sarpande had opposed their bail saying Rhea and Showik financed and arranged drugs. Sarpande also said that the probe was at a crucial stage and releasing the accused persons on bail may hamper the probe.
“We have opposed the bail pleas because, in this case, the quantity of the drug is not important; instead, the gravity of the offense is more important. All the accused are connected to each other, are involved in the conspiracy, and cannot be separated from the case,” said Sarpande.
Moreover.Narcotics Control Bureau argued that if released on bail, the actor "may tamper with the evidence and also try to win over witnesses using her position in the society and money power".
