Hyderabad, December 05: Taking a massive jump from 4 seats to 48 seats in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections, BJP has marked its expression as the key challenger to the state’s ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).
Right now BJP has begged 12 times the number of divisions it bagged in the previous election. Preventing the ruling TRS from securing a majority BJP has now become the second the second-largest party, dislodging the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) from half the seats it had held.
While Chandrasekhar Rao-led party climb down from winning 99 wards to 55 seats. Apart from BJP, AIMIM had won the same number of wards (44) as the 2016 GHMC polls. On the other hand, the electoral woes for Congress continued after its candidates secured a victory from only two wards, the same as last time.
In this election, TRS contested in all 150 wards, BJP in 149, Congress in 146, TDP in 106, and AIMIM in 51. As no party has secured a clear majority in the GHMC, there is speculation about TRS seeking AIMIM's support.
BJP president J P Nadda described the results as "historic" for the saffron party and claimed it showed that people of the country support "only and only development agenda". He said that this result reflects people's unequivocal support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's development and governance model. "GHMC results show rejection of Dynastic, Corrupt, and Appeasement politics.
It is a big victory for BJP as it has gained ground in the city and covered a long distance as it had won just four seats in 2016 In the 2018 Assembly election, the BJP barely registered its presence, winning just one seat from the 118 it contested in the 119-member Assembly, with a vote percentage of just above 7 percent.
With this performance, the BJP has now set its eyes on the assembly elections in Telangana. Coming close on the heels of its victory in the Dubbak Assembly by-election, the BJP's impressive show in Greater Hyderabad has given credence to its claim as the sole alternative for the TRS as well as an impetus to its dream march in the south.
All top leaders visited Hyderabad to campaign in the civic polls. Amit Shah, Yogi Adityanath, Tejasvi Surya, Prakash Javadekar, Smriti Irani are just some of the many leaders who made their way to Hyderabad.
