New Delhi, Dec 3: The microblogging social giant Twitter has once again hit headlines again and once for "wrong" reasons. It is correct to flag tweets spreading wrong information, apparently in an effort to prevent the spread of fake news but why target certain people who have brought the truth. This comes as it targeted BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya.
Malviya three days ago had hit back at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who shared the photograph of a security personnel and a Sikh man, with the former drawing his stick in an aggressive manner. He posted a video of the incident which shows that the security personnel did not hit the man with the stick and only swung it in the air.
Malviya in the same tweet also labeled Rahul Gandhi's image as propaganda aimed at giving the impression that the security personnel assaults the man. Following this, this tweet by Malviya has now been flagged by Twitter as "Manipulated Media".
Many Twitter users pointed out that while Twitter failed to institute any warning on Rahul Gandhi's tweet but somehow it ended up labeling Malviya's fact-check as manipulated. Meanwhile, the mainstream media has claimed that Malviya had allegedly posted a cropped video of the incident with another security personnel having hit the leg of the said protester moments earlier.
It should be noted that Twitter has been in the eye of the storm in the US over similar fact-checks which many allege disproportionately target conservative voices. It was reported that Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey had been slammed by US Senator Ted Cruz over its censorship of Hunter Biden's (the son of Presidential candidate Joe Biden) stories published by the New York Post. Following the US Presidential elections, Twitter had added numerous disclaimers and restricted Donald Trump's tweets wherein he had alleged electoral fraud.
Twitter in India has also indulged in numerous controversies which include suspension of Right-Wing Twitter accounts - the latest being True Indology. It has also shown Jammu and Kashmir and Leh as part of the People's Republic of China during a live broadcast. Chinese tech giant Xiaomi's default weather app allegedly did not show results for Itanagar and Arunachal Pradesh. Not only that it also provided no results for other districts in the State such as Pasighat and Longding. It was found that the default weather apps of Chinese phones in India do not show reports for cities that China considers as 'disputed'. This shows that Twitter’s decisions are based on its ideological stand, not on pure facts.
