New Delhi, Dec 11: Indian Medical Association IMA has declared a nation wide shutdown on Dec 11 to oppose the actions taken by AYUSH ministry in order to integrate ancient as well as modern medical sciences for a better outcome for public health services. The bandh calls for a nation wide closure of all non emergency services, however emergency services like COVID hospitals, ICU, Accident & Trauma services, Maternity Homes and Neonatal ICU will be functioning.

In Nov, the Ministry of AYUSH had declared that the students of Ayurveda with BAMS degree will be given training of 58 surgeries during their post graduation. This was declared with a view to strengthen the position of traditional medical sciences, in order to deal effectively with the rising health problems observed among the masses. However, IMA clearly wishes modern medical sciences and students opting for such sciences to have a dominance in the various medical fields including surgery.

IMA in their official statement has stated that the government has been trying many things in order to develop Ayurveda and other Indian systems of Medicine but instead of developing their original science, govt is doing a 'Copy Paste' activity The of implementing Modern Medicine Science techniques into these ancient branches of medicine and developing 'MIXOPATHY'.

The Govt has been trying to explain their stand by sharing how the Pandemic period has been crucial in understanding the significance of having a unified approach and an integrated system to deal with health problems instead of having a divided approach and adding to the people's confusion. However, IMA has crossed the boundaries for comprehension of the practical challenges ahead because of being blinded with their own pride and personal interests.

The shutdown is in demand for the withdrawal of the notification issued by Central Council for Indian Medicine that grants Ayurveda students to be trained for 58 types of surgeries. The shutdown also demands for the immediate dissolution of the 4 committees formed by National Medical Commission (NMC), which are made to integrate various branches of medical sciences.

“IMA, an organization that is primarily concerned about the interests of doctors and practitioners of modern medical sciences has become absolutely inconsiderate of the actual challenges in order to secure their monopoly in the health sector.”
