Elephant Health Camp organized in Kaziranga

Guwahati, Dec 11: An elephant health camp has been organised by the Kaziranga National Park authority for the routine health care of the departmental elephants of the park.

There are 63 numbers of camp elephants in various ranges of both Eastern Assam wildlife division and Western Assam wildlife division as well as in Laokhowa Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuary. Director of the park P Shivakumar, other officials and doctors supported the Elephant health programme.
 
A thorough health check up of all the departmental elephants was carried out by microscopic examination of the faecal samples for probable parasitic load.
 
Blood samples were collected from selected elephants for routine blood profile and general health check-up. Anti - helminthic, liver supportive medicines, Vitamins and mineral supplements and other supportive material was distributed among the elephants.
 
The Kohora range have maximum 28 numbers and Bagori range have 15 numbers of of captive elephants. It is generally observed that captive elephants have a lot of health problems. Malnutrition diseases like edema and blindness, wounds caused by mahouts, rope wounds, fissures on the footpads and bedsores are the most common.
