Akhtar has filed the complaint before the Metropolitan Magistrate at Andheri in Mumbai under Section 499 (defamation) and punishable under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code. Akhtar has requested the court to take cognizance of Ranaut's statements and to try her for the offense of criminal defamation. It is worth to be noted that this complaint has come after 3 months from broadcasting the interview.

The complaint has arisen from an interview given by Ranaut to the Republic TV channel causing hurt to Akhtar’s reputation. “Each and every allegation and imputation made in the said interview against the Complainant is false, defamatory, malicious, and has been made with reckless disregard to the truth,” the complaint states.

Akhtar has claimed that Ranaut has dragged his name unnecessarily in connection to the unfortunate death of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Akhtar has added that the video interview given by Ranaut has garnered views in lakhs over the Republic channel website as well as YouTube. He adds that Ranaut has made these comments as "part of a premeditated, willful and insidious campaign motivated by her commercial and personal motives of gaining publicity."

During the interview dubbed “Kangana Ranaut With Arnab Goswami On Nation Wants To Know”, Ranaut is stated to have commented that Akhtar was part of a "suicide gang" and that “he can get away with pretty much anything in Mumbai.” The 75-year-old lyricist has urged the court to take cognisance of Ranaut’s statements as it has caused “irreparable damage”. The court is scheduled to hear the matter on December 3.

Earlier today, the Mumbai Police issued fresh summons to Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel to appear for investigations next week. While Kangana has been called on November 9, Rangoli has to appear on November 10 before the Bandra Police, said lawyer Ravish Zamindar.
