New Delhi, Nov 30: Domestic and export demand for turmeric is recorded to be rising consistently since it is a potential and natural immunity-booster. During the COVID period, the demand for turmeric in the country as well as abroad has increased considerably due to its medicinal properties.
Quite recently, when the IMA has made claims against Ayurveda to be recommended as an effective method to deal with COVID 19 and has termed it to be a placebo, the records about export of turmeric have revealed the increasing dependability around the world on the traditional methods to cure health problems prescribed by the Ayurveda.
According to the reports, 4,000 bags of turmeric are arriving daily in Sangli Market Yard in Maharashtra. Seven lakh bags of 50 kg turmeric are exported from India every year. This year amidst Covid-19 outbreak, 16 lakh bags of 50 kg turmeric each were exported to various countries across the world.

Maharashtra's Sangli, Hingoli, Basmat, Nanded and Jalgaon are the leading producers of turmeric and produce the crop in large quantities. Turmeric from all over the country comes for sale in Sangli market yard, which makes the report significant.
The country produces about 90 lakh bags of turmeric every year. Out of which, 75 lakh bags gets sold while 15 to 20 lakhs of turmeric bags remain in the domestic market. However, due to increased demand for turmeric in the global market this year, the exports are expected to go up by 10 per cent in the new season beginning from January 2021.
