New Delhi, November 26: Director Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Malayalam film 'Jallikattu' has been selected for India's official entry for Oscars 2021 under, the International feature Film Category, Film Federation of India said. It was chosen among 26 other competitors.
The film was chosen by 14 members committee of the film federation of India. Talking about selection committee chairperson Rahul Rawail said at the press conference, “It brings out the raw problems that are there in human beings. The emotions that came up moved all of us. We felt that this is a unique ensemble of characters and locations.
The film went up against the Amitabh Bachchan-Ayushmann Khurranan starrer 'Gulabo Sitabo', Priyanka Chopra- starrer 'The Sky is Pink', Deepika Padukone’s ‘Chhapaak’, Nawazuddin Siddiqui's 'Serious Men' and even the Janhvi Kapoor starrer 'Gunjan Saxena'.
Jallikattu is a 2019's Indian Malayalam-language action film directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery with a screenplay by S. Hareesh and R. Jayakumar. It is based on the short story Maoist by Hareesh. The film stars Antony Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sabumon Abdusamad, and Santhy Balachandran. The plot follows a bull that escapes from a slaughterhouse in a hilly remote village and the entire village men gathering to hunt down the animal.
The 93rd Academy Awards are scheduled to be held on April 25, 2021, in Los Angeles. It is the third Malayalam film after Guru and Adaminte Makan Abu to be chosen as India's official entry to the Oscars.
Before hitting the theatre, Jallikattu premiered on 6 September 2019 at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival and received widespread critical acclaim. The film was also showcased at the 24th Busan International Film Festival under the section 'A Window on Asian Cinema'. Lijo Jose Pellissery received the Best Director trophy at the 50th International Film Festival of India.
