Guwahati, Nov 24: Tarun Gogoi, Former Chief Minister of Assam passed away on Nov 23, due to post COVID-19 complications. Gogoi was diagnosed with COVID-19 in August 2020.

He was then also administered with the plasma therapy. Tarun Gogoi served as the Chief Minister of Assam between 2001 and 2015. He was a member of the Congress party. Till date he was the longest serving CM of Assam.
 
Between 1991 and 1996 Gogoi had served as the Food and Food Processing Industry minister in the Union Cabinet of India under Prime Minister Narasimha Rao. He belonged to an Assamese Tai-Ahom family.
 
The MP elected over six times from Assam between 1971 and 2001, was away from Assam politics for a long period until in 2001 Assembly polls, when he was asked to lead the party against the influential Asom Gana Parishad government led by Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. Gogoi led the Congress to victory and became the Chief Minister for the first time in 2001.
