New Delhi, November 19: Joint committee of Parliament for Data Protection led by Meenakshi Lekhi grilled the microblogging site Twitter for not taking any action against comedian Kunal Kamra for his offensive tweets against the country's judiciary and the Chief Justice of India.
Both Lekhi and Congress leader Vivek Tankha took the lead in questioning Twitter for keeping the posts. They have asked the social media giant why it has failed to take any action against comedian Kunal Kamra's for his offensive tweets about the Chief Justice of India.
On which Twitter policy head Mahima Kaul said that the post cannot be removed unless the court issues such orders. Following which the pannel has given 7 days to Twitter to filed their response in the case. Lekhi says, “We’ve asked for an answer in 7 days. Since there are no laws in India regarding these, we have to talk to the top executives of such service providers”.
Kunal Kamra faces contempt cases over his tweets attacking the Supreme Court for granting TV anchor Arnab Goswami reprieve after his arrest in an abetment to suicide case. Eight people, mostly lawyers, have filed cases against him.
Twitter has already come under the scanner of pannel for geo-tagging Ladakh as a part of China. Twitter's chief privacy officer Damien Kieran sent an apology letter to the panel over the lapse, which was revealed after users tagged their posts as being in Ladakh but the geo-tag showed their location in China. It has promised the panel that it will be corrected by November 30.
