Mumbai, September 28: Today, INS Nilgiri, the first of the Indian Navy's seven new stealth frigates with enhanced stealth features fitted with State-of-the-art weapons & sensors splashed the waters. Savitri Singh, spouse of Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh today launched Nilgiri, which is the first ship of Project 17A here, and said that launching the first of such stealth frigates has brought him immense pride and satisfaction for the defence capabilities of the country.
This multi-mission frigate would be capable of dealing with conventional & unconventional threats to India’s Maritime interests.
"India is a large country and has vast maritime potential. We have around 7500 kilometers of the coastal area. A small disruption can damage our large interest that's the reason why we are giving so much importance to the Indian Navy," Raksha Mantri Singh said during the launch.
He also added that the launch of the stealth frigate was a significant step towards achieving majority defence production in the country.
He further said that delighted to attend the launch of warship ‘Nilgiri’. Today I am feeling immense satisfaction and pride at the launch of the mighty warship ‘Nilgiri’, first of the Project 17 Alpha (P17A) class ships.
The stealth frigate, Nilgiri, is made with the co-ordination of Mazagon Dockyard Limited and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers with the Indian Navy, DRDO, and other public and private partners.
The launch of the first ship of Project 17A marks another significant milestone in the annals of the indigenous warship design and construction program of India.
