Kolkata, September 20: Signifying yet another instance of abrupt and misaligned management of law and order, MoS Environment, Forest & Climate Change Babul Supriyo faced a massive protest from the students of the Jadavpur University, many of which belonged to the CPM backed Students Federation of India (SFI).
Babul Supriyo and the West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar were held hostage in a car by the protesting students while trying to leave the campus. Governor Dhankar had promptly acted after the ruckus blocking Supriyo went on for hours in the Jadavpur University. A section of students had targeted the Union Minister when he tried to attend an ABVP event and again when he tried to leave the campus after participating in the event. The students confronted him on the issue of National Register of Citizens in Assam.
Speaking to the media, Babul Supriyo said, “Governor and I are held hostage. The Kolkata Police is non-responsive.” The incident took place as Supriyo was exiting the college premises and the West Bengal Governor had reached the campus. The BJP leader was able to leave with the Governor in a car. However, the car was again blocked, and some protestors pounded on his car.
Union Minister Babul Supriyo was invited by the ABVP members to speak at an event at the Jadavpur University. When he tried to enter the campus for the event, he was blocked by many students many of whom were members of CPM-backed Students Federation of India (SFI). They gheraoed him and had a verbal confrontation mainly over the NRC. After the situation had cooled down, Supriyo attended the event but faced the situation again when trying to exit the campus.
Matters turned worse as Babul Supriyo was stuck inside the campus for at least three hours after the students blocked him. He even had to sit on a media OB Van's bonnet. The West Bengal Governor and the CRPF had to rush to the Jadavpur University. A situation of lockdown prevailed in the university as lights were turned off as the mayhem continued. Supriyo break out of the gherao to go along with the Governor after he intervened. Supriyo and Governor finally left in a car after being stopped by the protestors who also pounded their car.
