New Delhi, August 16: We usually love the voices of singers, but a personality happened on this earth which made people love prose vocals. A thundersome voice that trembled the Indian politics in the late 19th century, suddenly disappeared this day last year. Today we celebrate the first death anniversary of this eloquent speaker, wonderful poet, genuine nationalist and a never-ever happened politician – Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Vajpayee was a precious gem offered by the almighty to India. His political career as the three times Prime Minister, ten times Lok Sabha Speaker and Two times Rajya Sabha Speaker proved worthwhile for India. Vajpayee was the first Indian prime minister who was not a member of the Indian National Congress Party to have served a full five-year term career in office.
Right after independence, when Indian National Congress had rooted tightly in Indian soil, forming a new political party and entering the political battleground was not an easy task. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was one of the very few patriots who had taken up this herculean task. They formed Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which later became Bharatiya Janata Party, which got its first political victory in 1977 general elections. Astonishing and admirable victory of the BJP in 2014 and 2019 elections was the fruits of the hardships that was made once upon a time to create the atmosphere of nationhood. Although being completely retired from active politics since 2009, Atal Bihari Vajpayee was fortunate to see the dramatic victory of the BJP in 2014 elections, though not in 2019. However, one must be thankful to the destiny which gave him a long life with extraordinary physical, intellectual and vocal power.
Vajpayee’s thundersome speeches that trembled the Parliament and people, astonishing beauty of his poems, disciplined diplomacy, attempts to restore relations with Pakitan, courageous decision of Pokhran nuclear test proved to be the game-changers in Indian politics.
Vajpayee had once spoken about his 'lifechanging moment' at a public rally on the 1996 Lok Sabha election trail. He said "But I learned a lesson that changed my life. I took a pledge I’d never rote-learn a speech. It was my first speech at AVM (Anglo Vernacular Middle) School,"
One of the signs of greatness of a person is that he ceases to his work when he is at peak! When a person retires at such a point of time when all others want him to continue, he creates a permanent place in the hearts of people. Vajpayee did that. In December 2005, Vajpayee announced his retirement from active politics, declaring that he would not contest in the next general election. In a famous statement at the BJP's silver jubilee rally at Mumbai's Shivaji Park, Vajpayee announced that "Henceforth, Lal Krishna Advani and Pramod Mahajan will be the Ram-Lakshman [the two godly brothers much revered and worshipped by Hindus] of the BJP."
Atal Bihari Vajpayee biologically died on August 16, 2018. But, his thundersome voice still resounds in the universe and in the hearts of every indian!
