New Delhi, June 3: Emerging as a giant-killer, Smriti Irani has pulled off one of the biggest victories and scripted a historic win by dethroning Rahul Gandhi in Congress's home turf of Amethi. Known for his outspoken behaviour and robust attitude, Modi government has rightly opted Smriti Irani to hold the reins of Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD).

Ending all speculations if Irani would be rewarded with a bigger role in the government, following her election-defining victory over Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has chosen her to head the WCD even as she retains the textile ministry.

Undoubtedly the Modi government has always chosen strong, outspoken women in their Women and Child Development ministry. Rightly exhibiting the idea of women empowerment NDA’s last WCD minister Maneka Gandhi was a feisty, outspoken minister in her own right at the helm. Once again, the prime minister has chosen one of the most visible, popular faces of his team to head the ministry.

In the last five years of the Modi government, women-related issues like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, the government’s push to ban triple talaq, the focus on women in the flagship Mudra loan scheme, along with the Ujwala scheme have been at the core of politics and governance. The party has rightly chosen Smriti Irani for this role as she has always toed the party line on issues such as triple talaq, free toilets or as the party likes to call them ‘izzat ghar’ for women.

Slamming the newbie Priyanka Gandhi when the later targeted Irani by calling her an outsider, Smriti Irani has surely been a nightmare for the Gandhi’s. Sledging the streak of development and growth, Amethi was completely transformed into digital village under Smriti Irani, although Rahul Gandhi had won the 2014 elections.
