Chennai, Jun 20: Chennai experienced its first rainfall after experiencing 195 days of zero rainfall, bringing some relief to the city that has been ravaged by a heatwave for the past ten days.

Areas such as Tambaram, Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), East Coast Road (ECR), Padur, Kelambakkam, Siruseri, and Navalur experienced light showers today afternoon.

People celebrated as parts of the city received rainfall on Thursday, marking the arrival of south monsoon.

The previous few months for Chennai have been quite discomforting due to the intense and prolonged heat conditions that had gripped the city in a tight clutch. In addition, a largely deficient pre-monsoon rainfall and insufficient northeast monsoons have paved way for one of the biggest water crises Tamil Nadu has ever witnessed.

Despite the chances of rains, temperatures in Chennai are not likely to budge. Maximum temperature over the city is expected to be at 41°C and minimum temperatures may fall to 30°C. An advisory has been issued to avoid venturing out during the noon hours of the day.
