New Delhi, Jun 14: World is fighting and adjusting with changing the climate. Sustainable development is a key word for today's world. Now for adopting this climate change, the Hyderabad-based National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRDPR) has launched training program of Sustainable Livelihoods and Adaptation to Climate Change (SLACC) to help rural poor farmers to adapt to climate change.
Under the National Rural Livelihood Mission, the NIRDPR has launched the training program.
To combat the impact of climate change, the National Institue has unveiled the 1st batch of 'Climate-Smart Community Resource Persons' who will help the community at the grassroots level to fight the impact of climate change.
The project has begun for Shivapur and Mandla districts of Madhya Pradesh and Madhubani and Gaya districts of Bihar on a pilot basis.
on this initiative, head of the Centre for climate change and Disaster Mitigation, Dr. Ravindra S. Gavali said, "training will help improve the adaptive capacity of the community especially the poor engaged in farm-based livelihoods to cope with climate change".
Total 638 drought and flood-prone villages of Madhya Pradesh and Bihar are being covered on pilot basis under this first of its kind initiative.
The NIRDP Director-General Dr. W R Reddy informed that it will be scaled up nationwide in due course.
NIRDPR Director General W R Reddy said altogether 23 technology interventions are prioritized for farm level activities for climate resilience. They aim to reduce the cost of cultivation, improve yield and income, profitability, empower women and generate employment.
The SLACC project is funded by the Special Climate Change Fund, which was set up under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to finance global projects relating to adaptation, technology transfer, and capacity building, among other areas.
The SLACC project is being implemented in convergence with the Mahila Kisan Sashaktikaran Pariyojana, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) and other Centrally-sponsored schemes.
