Mumbai, April 26: Thinking of Mumbai, besides it being nation’s financial capital, the city of young dreams and ‘jaan’ (life) to many others in Maharashtra, the inceptive picture which reels our minds is that of the heavy rains. The city in wet weather is meant to witness waterlogging in the nooks and corners, traffic issues aligned and rail submerge post heavy downpour, creating a menace ahead for the commuters within.
Viewing to minimise and gradually avoid the significant said impact on railway traffic during the monsoon this year, the Western Railway, having its headquarters in Mumbai and local municipal authorities have decided to come up with special arrangements to lessen the scrape of the train passengers abide.
The report confirmed by the Western Railways laid down the major developments in relation, those being :
1. Construction of three new culverts at Vasai-Virar railway station, ensuring smooth flow of water below the railway track, during the downpour. The Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) has been submitted Rs 22.6 crore to the WR in this regard.
2. The VVCMC has invited a tender for fixing a drain in the eastern side of the railway track between Nalasopara and culvert number 83, while the bid for de-silting of the drain has already been awarded.
3. The work on cleaning the existing choked culverts beyond Nalasopara station has started from 25 January this year. This is to aid in proper flow and drainage of rainwater coming from various areas of the city.
4. The VVCMC is also tying up with MAHADA for widening choked culverts at several locations, while three new such water flow channels have to be constructed by the state government in bundh connecting to Vaitarna creek.
5. Viewing to prevent storm water coming over the rails, the WR has constructed a boundary wall parallel to the track on east and west side near Nalasopara station.
Apart from these steps, there are encroachments to the eastern side of the Nalasopara railway station which obstruct the flow of water in the rainy season. “The VVCMC will reportedly take action in this regard”, confirmed the report. With just a probable month left for monsoon’s arrival, this list counts a huge responsibility to the authorities and a hope of betterment for the commuters.
