Bangaluru, March 27: Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences Karnataka writes to Medical Council of India seeking permission for a new course, which contain the Doctorate of Medicine and of Philosophy is a program which holds good as a dual doctoral degree for medicos-research enthusiasts combining the vocational training of the Doctor of Medicine degree with the research expertise of the Doctor of Philosophy degree.
Renowned scientist Prof CNR Rao who delivered the convocation address urged RGUHS to introduce MD PhD programme in medicine. He said, “Introducing MD PhD programme will not just train the practising doctors, it will also help young and bright students to get trained,” he said.
Shruthi Korabu (22) from Babaleshwar village, Vijayapura district was a happy medical graduate in the RGUHS convocation on Tuesday. She became the first medical graduate from her village, who also bagged a gold medal. “I have completed B.Sc. in nursing and I am working as a community health officer now,” she said.
The University which is waiting for its approval from the MCI says it will be the first university in the country to implement this program.
The vice-chancellor of RGUHS Dr S Sachidanand confirmed to BM, saying, “We have written a letter to the Medical Council of India a month back for granting permission to start an MD-PhD from next year. We are awaiting MCI’s reply yet.”
“This is a simultaneous course along with the MD and students can continue to further do projects and various research works. If permitted, we will become the nation’s first university to have this course. This will break the conventional process of medicine and allow students for research work,” added the V-C.
