New Delhi, December 4: One of the renowned university in India, Savitribai Phule Pune University, is going to be the first university of India to open chapter in Qatar. A memorandum of understanding was signed between Pune University and Qatar's Milestone International Education enabling the University to set up its campus in Doha.
“In association with Mohammed Bin Hammam and Mr Ali A. Latif Al Mesned, we are providing pre-KG to college degrees now. It's a complete educational solution to all parents, and residents of Qatar and the Indian community in particular,” said Hassan Chougule, MIE Executive Committee President. The memorandum was signed with an aim to provide opportunities in higher education to nearly eight million Indian diaspora based in Qatar. The campus will be fully functional from next semester onwards.
In spite of such a large number of Indians in the State of Qatar, no Indian university has its campus in the country. Realizing this gap, the memorandum has been signed to promote cooperation between the two institutions with the support of government of State of Qatar. The MoU was signed on November 28.
“We will examine the market needs of the country and the programmes will be designed accordingly. We will also have to see how their programmes do not clash with the courses offered by other universities in the country,” said Dr Ibrahim bin Saleh al-Naimi, Undersecretary, MoEHE.
There are about 16 Indian schools in Qatar. The memorandum will open new avenues and opportunities for Indian community in Qatar as they will not be compelled to send back their children to India for higher education due to the absence of the campus of any Indian University in Qatar.
Qatar is an emerging economy and a dynamic centre of conciliation for a number of global disputes. With a tactical and balanced foreign policy Qatar can establish itself as regional educational hub by such MOUs with different universities of developing countries. As India has proved its mettle in higher education during last two decades, such type of agreements and MOUs will certainly provide an opportunity of low cost higher and technical education facilities to its expatriate as well as local population.
