New Delhi, December 11: A BJP parliamentary meeting was held on Wednesday at the Parliament Liabrary Building ahead of the tabling of the Citizenship Amendment Bill in the Rajya Sabha by the Home Minister later in the day.
PM Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, Ravi Shankar Prasad, EAM S Jaishankar, Smriti Irani were among the top BJP leaders who attended the parliamentary meeting.
"The Citizenship Amendment Bill will be tabled in Rajya Sabha at 12 pm today, and it will be passed in the house with comfortable majority", confirmed the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs. PM Modi said that the Citizenship Amendment Bill is a historic bill and would be written in golden letters for people who are persecuted on basis of religion.
It is understood that during the meeting, Prime Minsiter Modi asked all the Members of Parliament to take suggestions of farmers, traders and businessmen in their respective constituencies and give that feedback to Finance Minister.
With 293 in favour, the Citizenship Amendment Bill was roped in for discussion in the Lok Sabha on Monday morning. As some parts of the nation created furore on the bill, Union Minister Amit Shah rightfully stated that there was no political agenda behind the Amendment and there was no question of injustice with anyone.
His remark came amid the protest by the oppositions which labelled the legislation as regressive. As the historic debate looked into various aspects of the bill, the Lok Sabha passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill with 311 ‘Ayes’ and 80 'Noes'.
