Mumbai, November 23: In the most required, merry move, yet surprising, Bharatiya Janata Party's Devendra Fadnavis took oath as the Maharashtra Chief Minister for a second term at Raj Bhavan this morning. This is weeks after the state was placed under President's Rule. The National Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar's nephew, Ajit Pawar, meanwhile as sworn in to be his deputy.

"The BJP wanted to give a stable government to the people of Maharashtra", Fadnavis said after taking oath, adding that his party's ally Shiv Sena did not follow people's mandate. "We all know that there was President's rule for the last few days. I thank the NCP coming in support to form this government", he said.

"People had given us a clear mandate, but Shiv Sena tried to ally with other parties after results, as a result President's rule was imposed. Maharashtra needed a stable govt not a 'khichdi' govt", the newly elected CM added. Meanwhile Ajit Pawar, Dy CM of the state said, "From result day to this day no party was able to form Govt, Maharashtra was facing many problems including farmer issues, so we decided to form a stable Govt".

While this is a big bang on the face of Shiv Sena who had complicated the political situation in the state, the BJP-NCP combine coming together to form a government comes as a surprise to the citizens as the NCP, Sena and Congress had inched closer on Friday to announce an alliance to form a government in the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi meanwhile congratulated the new CM, being confident that the authorities would work diligently for the bright future of Maharashtra. "Congratulations to Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar on taking oath as the CM and Deputy CM of Maharashtra respectively. I am confident they will work diligently for the bright future of Maharashtra", he tweeted.
