New Delhi, October 03: Walking a rat race trying to prove his innocence, INX media accused P Chidambaram on Thursday moved the Supreme Court challenging the September 30 judgment of the Delhi High Court that dismissed his application for regular bail in the case.
Counting a month and more in Tihar jail, Chidambaram was denied the regular bail petition by HC on Monday claiming that the accused might influence witnesses in the case. In its order, the HC said that there was no chance of tampering of evidence, but there was a possibility that Chidambaram could influence witnesses.
Chidambaram had signed off on a huge infusion of foreign funds into the firm as the finance minister in 2007. He later had argued that the allegations against him were not grave in nature and carried only up to 7 years punishment.
The CBI which arrested him in August, however contended that the gravity of the offence had nothing to do with punishment provided. The gravity was to be judged by the impact the offence had on the society, economy, financial stability and integrity of the country.
The INX Media was co-founded by Peter and Indrani Mukerjea, who are currently in jail in the case involving the murder of Indrani's daughter Sheena Bora. Indrani Mukerjea has turned approver in the case against the Chidambarams and the investigative agencies have based their case on her testimony.
