Srinagar, February 28: For the second consecutive in two weeks, the Indian Air Force on Tuesday airlifted 234 stranded civilians from Udhampur to Leh in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir. Notably, Ladakh region remains cut-off for over five months due to heavy snowfall in Zojila pass area, along 434-km Srinagar-Leh National Highway, the only road linking the frontier region with rest of the state.
As many as 234 stranded civilians were airlifted by the sorties of Indian Air Force from Udhampur to Leh in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir. Due to recent snow and bad weather in the Leh-Kargil sector lot of civilians were stranded in Jammu region.
The Indian Air Forces operated its special aircraft IL-76 popularly called as Gajraj to airlift civilians on requisition by Jammu and Kashmir government. Air Force Station Udhampur was the staging base for this rescue activity. Special arrangements were made by Air Force Station Udhampur for Security and Marshalling of civilians which included Ladies and Children also, into the technical area.
The spokesman said, “Air Force Station Udhampur was the staging base for this rescue activity, the spokesman said.” He added that the special arrangements were made by Air Force Station Udhampur for the security and marshalling of the passengers.
Importantly, this is the second operation undertaken by the IAF in the past nine days. The Indian Air Force airlifted 233 stranded civilians from Udhampur to Leh in Jammu and Kashmir.
