New Delhi, December 28: Calling it a historic day, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has introduced the Triple talaq bill in Parliament today amidst protests from Opposition.

"Today is a historic day. Today, we are creating history and this law is about the pride of women. This law is for women's rights and justice and not regarding any prayer, ritual or religion," Ravi Shankar Prasad said introducing the bill.

"Even after the Supreme Court has outlawed instant talaq, the practice continues because there is no law against it. The SC has called it unconstitutional and how can then the parliament continue to allow triple talaq? The bill is about a woman's honour, not religion," says Law Minister.

Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge says that the party does not support the triple talaq bill as ruckus breaks out in the Lower House over the bill. Furthermore, BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab has said that the bill is flawed and has many "internal contradictions".

AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi objected to the bill, stating that the bill ' violates fundamental rights and lacks legal coherence'.

"The triple talaq bill violates the Right to Freedom. Muslims were not consulted for this bill. If passed, it will be injustice to Muslim women. Women abandoned by religion need help. The Bill lacks basic coherence," Asaduddin Owaisi after the triple talaq bill is tabled in Lok Sabha.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called for a consensus in passage of the bill on making instant triple talaq a punishable offence, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said while briefing reports after the weekly BJP Parliamentary Party meeting. PM’s comments came hours before the Bill was tabled in the Lok Sabha on Thursday afternoon.

The proposed law would be applicable on instant triple talaq or 'talaq-e-biddat' and give power to the victim to approach a magistrate seeking "subsistence allowance" for herself and minor children. The woman can also seek the custody of her minor children from the magistrate who will take a final call on the issue.

Under the law, instant triple talaq in any form spoken, in writing or by electronic means such as email, SMS and WhatsApp would be bad or illegal and void.
