Flicking off cases on illegal immigrants for final disposal, SC adjourns Rohingya case till January 2019

New Delhi, November 30: The rise of illegal immigrants and refugees have raised question on the national security of India. In this framework, the Central government had urged the Supreme Court to take strong legal actions on them.

 

The apex court on Friday adjourned the Rohingya case till January 2019 for final disposal of the matter. Citing threat to the national security and allegedly having connection to terror groups, the Government of India asked the Supreme Court to identify and deport Rohingyas back to their homeland.

It has been noted that around 40,000 Rohingya refugees have entered the country. Hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas of Myanmar have entered India and Bangladesh for seeking refuge following continued violence in their country. And out of these 40, 000; 16,000 are registered with the United Nation refugee agency.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had decided on Sending back to where they belonged to, by deporting seven Rohingyas to Myanmar. The Supreme Court, in October had allowed the deportation of the Rohingyas to Myanmar, saying they were found by the competent court as illegal immigrants and have been accepted by their country of origin as citizens.

A batch of pleas was filed in the apex court opposing the Centre’s decision to deport over 40,000 refugees who had fled from Myanmar after widespread violence and discrimination against the community.

The plea was filed by two Rohingya immigrants namely Mohammad Salimullah and Mohammad Shaqir, who claimed they took refuge in India after escaping Myanmar due to widespread discrimination, violence, and bloodshed against their community in Myanmar.

It has been reported that more than 650,000 Rohingya Muslims fled Rakhine in August 2017 after Myanmar’s army launched a massive crackdown in its northern state, retaliating the attacks by insurgents, Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army on the country’s police posts and a military base.
